For 3.8 billion years, or from the beginning of the history of life on Earth to the present day, there has been a continuous “era of great extinction”, as during this period most of the life forms that have inhabited the planet have disappeared. In this context, what this work considers are the forms of extinction that have been directly caused by humans, and not through ‘natural phenomenon,’ and it addresses this issue from the perspective of a future superhuman travelling back in time to 2020. It concentrates on such events that have occurred due to the human-made product of plastic, as the results of the excessive production of this material become clearly manifested, from environmental pollution to global warming. Now the Earth asks us: “Do you have the ability to survive the disaster that you caused?” Plastic Superhuman/Extinction (2020) offers a self-portrait of humans during this era of potential extinction, in which so many species that have existed on Earth have disappeared without ever even being identified. In this context, the future superhumans visiting 2020 to survey life on the planet, find themselves only able to identify plastics. In response they proclaim “There was no immortality in the world, but I created plastic.”
