An elegant building stands on Ireland’s historic Merrion Square. Four lost souls move and gather in shared moments of remembrance.
Filmed in Dublin’s newly refurbished Goethe Institut, Näher is a dance film directed by Alan Gilsenan and co-created by Liz Roche & Shane O’Reilly, that brings life to haunted spaces new and old, evoking fleeting memories and suspended dreams.
This film draws from the original live production of Näher… closer, nearer, sooner, commissioned by Goethe Institut Irland on the occasion of its re-opening at 37 Merrion Square in 2018. The live promenade dance piece premiered at Dublin Fringe Festival 2018 exploring W.B. Yeats’ belief that the dead dream backwards through their lives, living over and over again those events that most moved them. Journeying through different rooms of the building, the choreography offered opportunities to dream back into the lives of the performers and share in their search for the moment of most meaning in their lives.
