When you need extra traction, you’ve got options. Quick-fit chains are a tried and true choice to keep in your vehicle. And now, there’s another type of traction device available called a tire sock. They’re like a pair of socks for your vehicle with grippy fabric that pull over your tires.

Both quick-fit chains and tire socks offer traction on ice and snow. And with a little practice, both are relatively easy to install. But, as long as chains are listed as an option in your owner’s manual, quick-fit chains are likely the best choice for you. They can last for years and take you over the mountain and back again safely. However, they’re a bit more complicated to install than tire socks.

Tire socks, on the other hand, are designed for any vehicle with limited wheel well clearance and provide a smoother ride than chains. They are easy to install, but do wear out over time and need to be replaced once 50% of the road-contact fabric is gone.

Not sure which option is right for your car, truck, SUV or crossover? Stop by your local Les Schwab. Our team of pros will show you all the options and send you home with the right traction device for your vehicle.
