An artistic look at psychic withdrawal, therapeutic gathering, and the potential for healthy re-emergence.
‘The Clearing’ (2019) is a short dance movement film produced by the Northern Ireland Institute of Human Relations’ Psychoanalytic Art Group, a creative collaboration between art, psychoanalytic psychotherapy, dance movement therapy, and music therapy. Inspired by Donald Kalsched’s wonderfully vivid re-description and elaboration of Donald Winnicott’s concept of true and false self responses to trauma, the film illustrates the creative potential for a sensitive clinical engagement to transform an isolated internal prison into a therapeutic clearing – in which reflection, mutual aliveness, growth, and movement are possible.
Established in 2016, the Institute’s Psychoanalytic Art Group is a creative, playful space, facilitated by artist and psychoanalytic psychotherapist Cheryl Bleakley. Group members have explored different artistic forms, including screen-printing, painting, dance movement, and film-making. ‘The Clearing’ has been screened at a number of conferences and art festivals, and two accompanying papers (from psychoanalytic and dance movement therapy perspectives) are available to anyone who is interested.
