Speculative design project developed within the Final Synthesis Studio 2020/2021 of Communication Design C1 at Politecnico di Milano.
The theme assigned was virginity loss as a rite of passage. The starting point for the project was the negative language related to the first sexual experience. There is no single word, in many languages, to express in a non negative way the opposite of being a virgin. Yet the cultural environment has shifted toward a freer sexual expression there’s a language gap which we tried to stress using non-verbal communication and a revisited visual metaphor.
We design a special kit with five devices 3D printed that works thanks to arduino, sensors and attuators placed on the inside. The user is asked to express what thinks about this rite the passage, the first sexual experience, using the five sensorial devices and making a choice based on what best represent his conception. The experience requires to try out different tastes, textures, level of pressure, and temperature. The user will finally receive a new kind of way to express this rite: a beautiful flower unique in colors and shapes that are based on his/her choices. Entering the garden, he/she will discover a whole garden of flowers and will explore them making comparisons.
